Montessori education was developed by Italian physician, Maria Montessori, who studied Pedagogy at the University of Rome. She developed Casa dei Bambini in 1907, which was her first classroom in Rome.
She came to realize that children who were placed into an environment where activities were designed to support their natural development had the power to educate themselves. Dr. Montessori believed that it’s important to put many different activities and materials into the children’s environment, but to keep only those that they were engaged in.
The Montessori education spread to the U.S.A. in 1911. Dr. Montessori stated, ‘I did not invent a method of education. I simply gave some little children a chance to live.’
The Montessori style of education emphasizes cognitive development and individual instruction with a child working at his or her own pace. Children are encouraged to teach and collaborate with one another, and a child is an ACTIVE rather than passive participant in learning.
